MA: Suspects sought in Cape puppy theft

HYANNIS — The Barnstable police are searching for three suspects who allegedly stole a puppy from a pet store inside the Cape Cod Mall two days before Christmas.  The 9-week-old black-and-white border collie, which was found unharmed wandering down Old Mill Road a few hours after the theft, was swiped from Debbie's Pet Land on Dec. 23.

The police said two men and a woman asked to play with the dog around 2:30 p.m.

Store Manager Skyler Sheehan said she followed company protocol by checking the identification of all three suspects — described as two Hispanic males and one white woman all in their early 20s — to make sure they were over the age of 18.

While the suspects were playing with the border collie, there was a problem with one of the other dogs that required the staff's attention, Sheehan said.
When Sheehan returned, the suspects and the dog were missing.  Sheehan said she immediately called mall security and the police, who said a witness outside of the mall saw the two men holding a puppy and running toward the Courtyard Marriott hotel.

Another pair of witnesses told the police they saw the men get into a "white Lincoln with chrome rims."  Witnesses said both men were wearing New York Yankee hats, clothing and accessories.

At 6:45 p.m., a good Samaritan found the dog walking down the middle of Old Mill Road near Race Lane, Barnstable police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said.  "We don't know why, but obviously they took the dog and then threw him out," Sweeney said.

The dog was not hurt and was returned to Debbie's Pet Land. The unnamed puppy retails for $1,060, Sheehan said.

The police searched the area around Old Mill Road for the suspect vehicle, but found nothing. None of the store employees remember the names or hometowns on the drivers licenses of the male suspects, but Sheehan said the woman had a Falmouth address. No arrests have been made, Sweeney said.

Sheehan said she can't remember a similar incident in her two years on the job, but said interest in puppies definitely increases during the holidays.
The store sold 10 dogs in the past week, Sheehan said.  Sheehan said the border collie is looking for a home and is featured in the store's front window.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville pet store opened its doors Christmas Eve to find that they had been burglarized sometime after it closed Wednesday night.

Thieves broke into the Pet's Palace store on Goldsmith Lane just east of Bardstown Road. They didn't steal money or pet supplies, but instead walked away with three ferrets - one of which was already purchased by a customer to be a Christmas gift.

Store owner Jay Hockersmith says the animals need special care, and he's concerned about their well being.

"When you steal the animal, it obviously doesn't have value," Hockersmith said. "And sure they can play with it for a few hours and then discard the animal. So yeah, we are concerned for the safety of the animals. We'd like to have them back safely."

It's still unknown why the crooks targeted the small animals.

"Ferrets are very popular little pets these days," Hockersmith said. "They're very fascinating little animals, gentle little animals and I guess somebody just wanted a baby ferret for Christmas."

Police are still looking for suspects, and believe they have a good idea of who did it. Hockersmith did say he would not press charges if the animals are returned unharmed.

PA: Chihuahua Thieves Strike Delco Pet Store

Chihuahua Thieves Strike Delco Pet Store
by KYW's Dave Madden

The search is on for whoever stole a rather valuable dog from a Delaware County pet store.  It’s the third dog in about a year to be plucked from We Love Pets on Baltimore Pike in Springfield.

Springfield township police say the weekend theft of a $1,400 Chihuahua is not related to last Jaunary’s theft of a black pug and a maltipom.

Lt. William Clark says two white men walked into the store and left quickly:  "The clerk looked and found that a Chihuahua was missing from the cage in the store. They believe that the two actors left in a silver Ford with an unknown Pennsylvania registration."

The owner of the store has not returned calls seeking comment about the thefts.

SPRINGFIELD — A dognapper made off with $1,400 Chihuahua from the We Love Pets Store in the Stoney Creek Shopping Center Saturday.  The dognapping is the second this year at the pet store, located in the 400 block of Baltimore Pike.

According to police a white man, in his early 20s walked into the pet store around 11:37 a.m. and stood next to a display cage. He scooped up the light-gray Chihuahua, ran out of the store and jumped into a silver pickup truck operated by another man. The dog napping duo fled from the parking lot in an unknown direction.

Both suspects are in their early 20’s and were wearing dark hoodies. In January, a pair walked out of the same pet shop with two puppies, a pug and a Maltipom, valued at $1,000 each.

Anyone who has information about the incident is urged to contact Detective James Devaney at 610-544-1100.

Delco Pet Store Gets Back Pricey Stolen Pup

by KYW's David Madden

A primo priced pup purloined from a Delaware County pet shop last week is back in its cage - none the worse for the experience - but the thief is still being sought.

The $1400 Chihuahua was plucked from a cage at We Love Pets on Baltimore Pike in Springfield on the 19th.  Then, Springfield police lt. William Clark says, the store got a gift on the day after Christmas:

“The pet store received a phone call from a female who said that the dog is by their back door in a box. The employees went out and found the dog. The dog appeared to be in good shape and not abused.”

Cops have a surveillance photo of a suspect and are trying to track him down. The store owner isn’t talking.  Then again, he’s had 3 high-priced pooches stolen this year and two of them were not recovered, nor has anyone been charged.
