LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville pet store opened its doors Christmas Eve to find that they had been burglarized sometime after it closed Wednesday night.

Thieves broke into the Pet's Palace store on Goldsmith Lane just east of Bardstown Road. They didn't steal money or pet supplies, but instead walked away with three ferrets - one of which was already purchased by a customer to be a Christmas gift.

Store owner Jay Hockersmith says the animals need special care, and he's concerned about their well being.

"When you steal the animal, it obviously doesn't have value," Hockersmith said. "And sure they can play with it for a few hours and then discard the animal. So yeah, we are concerned for the safety of the animals. We'd like to have them back safely."

It's still unknown why the crooks targeted the small animals.

"Ferrets are very popular little pets these days," Hockersmith said. "They're very fascinating little animals, gentle little animals and I guess somebody just wanted a baby ferret for Christmas."

Police are still looking for suspects, and believe they have a good idea of who did it. Hockersmith did say he would not press charges if the animals are returned unharmed.
